Customers take advantage of the new Management Training modules
Founded in 1889 and headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, TORM is one of the world’s most respected names in international shipping. The company is responsible for the commercial operation of approximately 90 vessels, including some of the most modern and well-equipped ships afloat. The fleet composes of tanker and bulk carriers, with product tanker activity accounting for the majority of the company’s business.
Management Skill Modules
TORM, like many other shipping companies, realized the importance of their officers to possess effective management skills and also the fact these CBTs can provide some crucial tools to develop this expertise. These essential management or “Soft skills” have been developed by Seagull working closely with the well respected Danish training company, Green Jacobsen, specialists in management training.
In earlier newsletters we have described five of the eight modules available and finally here is a brief insight into the remaining three modules.
Meeting Management (CBT#254)
Many people often feel that holding a meeting is a waste of time. They say so, because meetings sometimes create confusion rather than provide clarity. However, a well-organized meeting is an effective venue for discussions of crucial issues within an organization. Meetings entail good meeting management skills in order to succeed.
This course is specifically designed to guide officers in holding onboard meetings. It also aims to teach participants how to identify the different types of meetings, how to prepare effectively for these meetings and how to participate actively in them. The course also explores how to make a follow-up after the meeting to ensure that key points are properly acted upon.
Team Leadership (CBT#256)
Maximizing the potential of multi-skilled crews can only happen if the leadership style within an organization follows an effective management philosophy and approach, which may be quite different from those applied a few decades ago.
A small group of multi-skilled crew will only function effectively, if they are allowed the freedom and control over their own efforts, to apply their expertise, skills and techniques in accomplishing their own individual tasks.
Running a modern ship is no longer just a question of following orders from superiors, because subordinates must be capable of and often given the authority to act on their own initiative.
The competence of the team leader is often tested under pressure, where he needs to take responsibility over issues and concerns, but at the same time, he or she, needs to ensure the dynamism of the whole team. This CBT module is to help develop the required skills to effectively tackle these leadership issues.
Stress Management (CBT#257)
Stress is a normal part of life. We experience stress as we adapt to changes in our environment. Stress can either help or hinder us from dealing with different circumstances, but this depends on how we react to it and manage it.
High levels of stress can have a serious impact on the crew’s performance onboard because stress itself increases the risk of human errors. If we manage stress positively, our bodies will repair any damage it has caused. But if we deal with it negatively, stress-related tensions will build up and take over control of us and in the long term lead to health problems.
In the shipping business - where safety is one of the most important concern – successful Stress Management can improve performance and help reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and illnesses.
